By the mid-1980s, the Phoenix Open had outgrown its longtime home at Phoenix Country Club, and the tournament's host organization, the Phoenix Thunderbirds, went looking for a site that could hold a crowd. PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman wanted something built the way TPC Sawgrass had been built — 'stadium golf,' with the land itself shaped to give spectators sightlines instead of relying on temporary grandstands. He turned to architects Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, and construction began on the Sonoran Desert site in January 1986.
Weiskopf and Morrish designed with the gallery as much as the golfer in mind: earthen mounds pushed up around greens and fairways to create natural amphitheaters, wide corridors able to absorb enormous foot traffic, and a desert target-golf character that rewarded bold, accurate shot-making over raw length. The course opened that same year and became the tournament's permanent home in 1987 — a relationship that has now run longer than almost any other TPC venue's tie to its Tour event.
No hole embodies the concept better than the par-3 16th, fully enclosed by grandstands and skyboxes and known simply as 'The Coliseum.' It seats somewhere in the neighborhood of 20,000 fans, and on January 25, 1997, a 21-year-old Tiger Woods, playing in just his third Phoenix Open, holed a 9-iron there for an ace that brought the tee box to a roar and beer cans raining onto the turf. The moment turned the 16th from a good stadium hole into the loudest single hole in professional golf.
That reputation has only grown. What's now the WM Phoenix Open routinely draws the largest crowds of any golf tournament on Earth — roughly 718,000 fans across tournament week in 2018, and a single-day record north of 250,000 in 2023 — earning the event its nickname, 'The People's Open.' In 2026, it raised a tournament-record $20.1 million for local charities, proof that the stadium built for noise has also become one of golf's biggest fundraising engines.
