Everything at TPC Sawgrass lives in the shadow of one par 3. The Stadium Course opened in 1980, the 17th became the most photographed hole in golf, and THE PLAYERS made Ponte Vedra Beach a destination. Seven years later the property added a second eighteen, and it was built on a different premise entirely.
Dye's Valley opened in 1987 — Pete Dye and Bobby Weed, with 1982 PLAYERS champion Jerry Pate consulting — and it was laid out originally with senior professionals in mind. Par 72 at about 6,800 yards, it sits lower and quieter than the Stadium, with the same Dye edges and the same Florida water but none of the theatre. It is a golf course rather than an arena.
That has not kept it out of competition. The Senior Players Championship came here in 1988 and 1989; the Web.com Tour Championship was played on it from 2013 to 2015; the Korn Ferry Challenge in 2020; and it has served as a final-stage venue for PGA Tour Q-School, which may be the truest test of a golf course there is — an entire career riding on four rounds.
For most visitors it is the round they book when the Stadium is full, and the one they end up talking about on the way home.
