The Story
The course built to stage golf, turned upside down by a green that fits inside a swimming pool.

In the late 1970s, PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman set out to build something that didn't exist yet: a course designed from the start to be watched, not just played. He hired Pete Dye to carve it out of Ponte Vedra Beach palmetto scrub and swamp, and gave the project a name that described the idea outright — stadium golf, with earthen mounds ringing the holes so galleries could see the action from every angle.

Dye's wife and design partner, Alice, is credited with the course's defining stroke of nerve. Digging the Stadium Course out of wetland had left the crew with a deep borrow pit near the back nine — and rather than fill it in, Alice suggested ringing it with a green and calling it a hole. The par-3 17th, an island entirely surrounded by water and reachable only by a short iron, became the most photographed and most feared green in golf.

THE PLAYERS Championship moved to the Stadium Course in 1982, its permanent home ever since. Jerry Pate won that inaugural staging and, in a burst of relief and mischief, pushed Pete Dye and Deane Beman into the pond beside the 18th green before jumping in himself — a stunt that became tradition and told the world exactly what kind of course this was. The Stadium Course has anchored the Tour's flagship event, and the Tour's own headquarters, ever since.

What Dye built is less pretty than punishing: railroad ties, pot bunkers, water guarding half the holes, and a finishing stretch — the par-5 16th, the island 17th, the water-lined 18th — that has decided more Sunday afternoons than almost any closing three holes in the game. It rewards precision over power, nerve over swagger, and it has never stopped testing the best players in the world exactly as Beman and the Dyes intended.
