TPC Louisiana opened in 2004 on 250 acres of wetland on the West Bank of the Mississippi, twenty miles southwest of New Orleans. Pete Dye designed it with PGA Tour player Steve Elkington and New Orleans native Kelly Gibson consulting, and he built exactly what the ground suggested: 7,425 yards threaded between cypress and live oak, five ponds, and something near a hundred bunkers.
It had barely opened when Hurricane Katrina came through in August 2005. The course closed. It reopened ten months later, and while the 2006 Zurich Classic was played at English Turn, the tournament came back to Avondale and has been there ever since — a golf course serving, in a small way, as one of the visible pieces of the city's recovery.
Since 2017 the Zurich Classic has been something no other event on the PGA Tour schedule is: a two-man team competition for official FedExCup points, alternate shot on Thursday and Saturday, better ball on Friday and Sunday. It has given TPC Louisiana an identity entirely its own — the one week a year when tour players get to bring a partner.
The rest of the year it is a daily-fee TPC course open to anyone who books a tee time, which is the other reason Dye's Delta routing matters: most people who look at this map have actually played the holes on it.
