Central Florida is famously flat — except here. The land beneath Streamsong sits in the Bone Valley, one of the richest phosphate deposits on earth, and for the better part of a century mining companies stripped it in long parallel cuts, piling the leftover sand and clay into ridges while the emptied pits filled with water. By the time the digging moved on, the property had been left with something no natural stretch of central Florida ever had: rolling elevation, sandy waste, and a chain of lakes.
When The Mosaic Company set out to reclaim the ground, the usual outcome would have been to bulldoze it flat and return it to pasture or wetland. Instead, someone walked the mined-out ridges and saw a golf property. Rather than erase the topography the mining had created, Mosaic hired architects to route courses through it as they found it — high ground and all.
The highest, most dune-like of those ridges went to Tom Doak, the minimalist behind Pacific Dunes and Ballyneal, working through his firm Renaissance Golf Design. Doak's Blue opened at the close of 2012 alongside a sister course by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Streamsong Red, and together the two announced a golf destination unlike anything else in the state — firm, sandy, and wind-exposed, closer in feel to a British links than a Florida resort. Blue leans into that inheritance, its bunkers cut hard into the old mining ridges and its greens built with the kind of movement that rewards a ground-game approach.
A small chapel on a spit of land between the Red and Blue courses, built as a wedding venue overlooking one of the old mining lakes, has become the property's most photographed spot — a quiet coda to a landscape that industry made and golf remade again. Streamsong remains a resort, not a club: any guest can play the ground the phosphate mines left behind.
