Streamsong sits on land that spent most of the twentieth century being taken apart. For decades, the Mosaic Company mined this stretch of central Florida for phosphate, the mineral behind much of the world's fertilizer, leaving behind a landscape no one expected: rolling spoil mounds, deep water-filled pits, and sand ridges piled fifty feet above the flat Florida scrub around them. When the mining moved on, Mosaic looked at the reclaimed ground and saw something rare for the state — real elevation, real sand, real drama — and decided to build golf courses instead of selling the land off flat.
The Red and Blue courses, designed by Coore & Crenshaw and Tom Doak and opened in 2012, turned that unlikely land into one of American golf's fastest-rising destinations. The success gave Mosaic room to be even more ambitious for a third course, and the commission went to Gil Hanse, working with longtime design partner Jim Wagner — the team that had just built the Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro and would go on to restore some of the game's most storied clubs. Streamsong Black opened in 2017.
Hanse and Wagner built it as the biggest and boldest of the resort's three courses on purpose. The greens are enormous, several among the largest in American golf, giving the mining-scarred terrain room to breathe through wide, rugged corridors of exposed sand that read more like a quarry's edge than a traditional bunker. Fairways spill generously across the reclaimed dunes, daring players to find the angles rather than penalizing them for missing narrow lines — a scale suited to land this unusual.
Together, Red, Blue, and Black turned an old mining site into a golf destination with no real precedent in Florida — three championship courses of true elevation and sand on ground that, a generation earlier, existed only to be dug up and hauled away. Streamsong remains a walking, caddie-optional resort open to any guest with a tee time, no membership required, out where the phosphate pits used to be.
