The Story
A private oasis willed out of flat desert sand.

There was nothing here. North of the Las Vegas Strip, the site Steve Wynn chose for his private course was flat, featureless scrubland — no hills, no water, no trees, nothing a golf architect could route around. Wynn hired Tom Fazio anyway, gave him a budget with no real ceiling, and asked for a course that felt like it belonged in the Carolina highlands, not the Mojave.

Fazio's crews moved roughly three million cubic yards of earth to invent the terrain from scratch — berming the perimeter more than 40 feet high so nothing of the surrounding desert or city was visible from inside the ropes, then sculpting ridgelines, creeks, and a waterfall where the land had offered none. More than 20,000 trees, many trucked in at full maturity, were planted to turn bare sand into what plays like a forested mountain retreat. It remains one of the most radical acts of golf-course earthmoving ever attempted.

Wynn opened it in 1990 as his own private club, and for years Shadow Creek was less a golf course than a rumor — a $60 million fantasy that ordinary golfers only heard about. When Wynn sold his company to MGM in 2000, Shadow Creek went with it; today it belongs to MGM Resorts International and is playable only by guests of an MGM property, booked through the resort concierge at a green fee that has always been among the highest in America.

That exclusivity has made Shadow Creek a kind of golf legend hiding in plain sight — a major-championship-caliber course that has hosted only a handful of outside events, each one treated as a rare admission into Wynn's manufactured Eden.
