Sea Island's golf story begins with Howard Coffin, the industrialist who bought up the marsh-fringed islands off Brunswick in the 1920s and set about turning them into a resort. For his golf course he went to the era's most sought-after design partnership, Englishmen Harry Colt and Charles Alison, who laid a nine-hole links across the tidal flats of St. Simons Island. It opened in 1929, built low to the ground and open to the wind, more Scottish coast than Georgia lowcountry — a course shaped by marsh and dune rather than pine and azalea.
The club grew in stages after that. In 1973, architect Joe Lee added a second nine reaching further into the marsh, giving Sea Island eighteen holes for the first time. But it was Tom Fazio's 1999 rebuild that unified the property into the Seaside Course played today — reworking the routing to run hard along Black Banks River and the tidal creeks, restoring the width and wind-exposed character of Colt and Alison's original ground.
That marshland setting made Seaside a fixture on the PGA Tour's autumn schedule. The tournament arrived in 2010 as the McGladrey Classic, organized by the Davis Love III Foundation, and was renamed the RSM Classic in 2015. It plays across both the Seaside and Plantation courses, with rounds rotating between them, and for much of the 2010s served as the Tour's final official event of the calendar year — sending players into the offseason on the same holes Colt and Alison first cut from the marsh.
Seaside is also home turf in a more literal sense. More than twenty touring professionals — Davis Love III, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, and Harris English among them — live in the area and train at Sea Island's Golf Performance Center, a concentration of Tour talent golf writers have taken to calling the 'Sea Island Mafia.' For them, and for anyone who tees it up on Seaside, the course reads the same way it did in 1929: par is set by the wind off the marsh, and the round belongs to whoever reads it best.
