The Story
One of the rare Golden Age courses in the Mountain West, falling down the mouth of Parley's Canyon and climbing back.

The Country Club was incorporated in Salt Lake City on October 2, 1899, when membership cost twenty-five dollars for men and ten for women and the course was nine holes with sand greens on all but the ninth. It moved once, to Forest Dale in 1905, and then again in 1920 to the ground it still occupies at the mouth of Parley's Canyon.

That third move is the one that mattered. William Watson — the Scot behind Olympic Club and Interlachen — laid out eighteen holes across 175 acres with Harold Lamb, and the course formally opened on May 12, 1921. It is one of very few Golden Age designs in Utah, and Watson used the site the way an architect of that era would: he let the land fall.

The routing is genuinely two-sided. The front nine works across sloping ground and finishes with a downhill par 5 whose fairway splits along the edge of a canyon. The back nine drops harder — a hundred feet of it on the 10th alone — down to lower ground where Parley's Creek is in play, then climbs back toward the clubhouse and a par 4 closer with a hidden hazard and a heavily bunkered green.

The clubhouse was rebuilt in 2002 to bring back the look of the 1924 original, and John Harbottle III spent eighteen months from 2006 reworking bunkers, tees and greens — updating the course without arguing with what Watson had done.
