The Story
Eighteen holes of untouched Sonoran desert, and not a rooftop in sight.

Quintero opened in 2000 in the Hieroglyphic Mountains northwest of Phoenix, near Lake Pleasant, on land wild enough that Rees Jones didn't have to invent drama — he had to route around it. Working with associate Steve Weisser, Jones threaded the course through rugged high-desert foothills studded with saguaro and ironwood, letting the terrain's own elevation changes do the work a lesser site would need bunkers and water to fake.

The course was originally called the Founders Course, planned as the first half of a two-course destination — a companion Charter Course, to have been designed by Greg Norman, was announced but never built. Quintero stood alone, and it turned out to be more than enough: no houses crowd its fairways, no cart paths of a surrounding development creep into view. From the high points, the round looks out on unbroken desert and mountain, a setting closer to a national park than a subdivision.

Golfweek named Quintero to its list of America's Best Modern Courses in 2002, two years after opening, and the course has held a spot on that list most years since. In 2017, both Golf Digest and Golfweek named it Arizona's Best Public Course — recognition for a layout that stretches to 7,249 yards from the tips with a 75.3 rating and 148 slope, numbers that put it among the most demanding public tests in the state.

Quintero has never chased a major championship, and it doesn't need one. Its résumé is built instead on qualifiers, mini-tour stops, and two and a half decades of steady praise from the golfers who make the drive north from Phoenix for a round that feels, for a few hours, like the desert belongs to no one but them.
