Jack Nicklaus was still an active Tour player, in his early thirties and already the greatest champion of his era, when he set out in the early 1970s to build a course on ground he knew before he ever picked up a club — 220 wooded acres north of Columbus where his father had taken him hunting as a boy. Working with architect Desmond Muirhead, Nicklaus broke ground in July 1972 and opened the course in May 1974, naming it Muirfield Village after the Scottish links where he had won his first Open Championship in 1966. It was Nicklaus's design debut, and from the start it carried an unusual level of architectural ambition for a young player's first course — wide corridors, strategic risk-reward angles, and a finishing stretch built to produce drama.
Nicklaus built the course with one goal beyond golf itself: to give the PGA Tour a tournament run the way the Masters was run, hosted at a permanent home course by the game's own players rather than a rotating civic committee. The Memorial Tournament debuted in 1976 — Roger Maltbie beat Hale Irwin in a playoff to win it — and from the beginning it named an annual 'Honoree,' a golfer chosen for lifetime contribution to the game, a tradition the tournament still carries on every year.
The course quickly proved itself as a major-championship test in its own right. Muirfield Village hosted the 1987 Ryder Cup, the 1998 Solheim Cup, and the 2013 Presidents Cup — becoming, by most counts, the only golf course in the world to have hosted all three of the sport's marquee international team competitions. Tiger Woods made the course something close to his own private stage in the Memorial's modern era, winning five times between 1999 and 2012, including three straight from 1999 to 2001 by a combined fourteen strokes — still the tournament record for career victories.
More than fifty years on, Muirfield Village remains exactly what Nicklaus built it to be: a working PGA Tour venue that reinvests in itself constantly, hosting a signature event that draws the game's best every year in late May or early June, on a piece of hunting ground its architect never really left.
