The Story
A walk through the Lawson estate's woods to the lake — the opposite of the Links in every way that matters.

Lawsonia is a 36-hole property in Green Lake, Wisconsin with two courses that could not be less alike. The Links, from 1930, is bare, bold, treeless ground by William Langford and Theodore Moreau — earthworks and plateau greens and one of the great examples of the American ground game. The Woodlands, from 1983, goes the other way entirely.

Joe Lee and Rocky Roquemore, both trained in the Dick Wilson school of Florida design, routed the second course through the mature forest of the old Lawson estate and down toward the shore of Green Lake. It is tree-lined where the Links is open, sheltered where the Links is exposed, with real elevation change, several water holes, and a quarry hole that has no counterpart on the older course.

For years the Woodlands was simply 'the other 18' — the one people played on the second day of a trip built around the Links. A renovation completed in 2021 changed that conversation; the course reopened in May of that year to notably better reviews than it had ever had.

Playing both in a day is the real argument for coming to Green Lake. Two courses, half a century apart, over the same estate — and no honest golfer finishes without an opinion about which one they'd rather have.
