The land once belonged to Victor F. Lawson, the Chicago Daily News publisher who built a lakeside estate on Green Lake and gave it the name Lawsonia. When the property passed out of the Lawson family's hands, its new developers saw a golf destination in the rolling farmland above the water, and in 1930 they hired the Chicago design-and-build firm of William Langford and Theodore Moreau to lay out a course on the open, treeless ground.
Langford, a former national discus and shot-put champion turned civil engineer, built golf the way he understood the world — with earth moved on purpose and lines drawn with a square. Lawsonia's greens sit up on squared-off, flat-topped plateaus, so severe and utilitarian in their shaping that architecture writers gave them a nickname that stuck: 'boarding-house' greens, plain and no-frills, but exacting to hold. Around them he cut bunkers with steep, engineered walls that drop like quarry faces rather than soft dunes.
For decades Lawsonia stayed exactly what it looked like from the road — a municipal-feeling course in rural central Wisconsin, largely unknown outside the state. Then the golf architecture world rediscovered Langford's muscular, geometric style in the late twentieth century, and Lawsonia's Links course, remote and unaltered, became one of its pilgrimage sites: a course architecture enthusiasts drive hours out of their way to walk.
It remains a working public course today, its companion Woodlands course alongside it on the same grounds, both still tracing Langford and Moreau's original lines. Lawsonia asks nothing of a visitor but a tee time and a willingness to play the ground as it was engineered nearly a century ago.
