Larry Packard, an architect who would eventually put his name on more than 600 golf courses, opened the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook in 1972 and gave Florida something it rarely offers: real elevation change, routed through pine woods with none of the flat, canal-lined sameness so much of the state's golf falls into. Packard liked the property enough to make Innisbrook his home for more than forty years afterward — the resort's steakhouse still carries his name.
The course's name has nothing to do with the venomous snake most visitors assume. Construction crews digging the site in the early 1970s kept turning up copper pennies in the ground, for reasons nobody could explain, and the name stuck from there — a nickname for a nickname, as odd histories go. Copperheads themselves aren't even native to that part of Florida.
Professional golf arrived at Innisbrook in 1990, when the tournament that had been the JCPenney Classic moved to the Copperhead Course, and the event has called it home through name changes to the Chrysler Championship, the Transitions Championship, and, since 2014, the Valspar Championship. In 2007, tournament director Gerald Goodman needed a name for the course's brutal closing stretch — the 16th, 17th, and 18th, individually nicknamed the Moccasin, the Rattler, and the Copperhead — and settled on the Snake Pit. Water guards the 16th green, the long uphill 17th demands a precise long iron, and bunkers crowd the 18th; since 2000 the trio has played more than five thousand strokes over par in tournament competition, one of the toughest closing stretches on the PGA Tour.
A 2015 restoration by Packard's original design intent, followed by continued upkeep since, has kept the Copperhead as sharp a test as it was the year it opened. Sam Burns won back-to-back Valspar titles here in 2021 and 2022; Viktor Hovland closed out four back-nine birdies to hold off Justin Thomas in 2025. Half a century after Packard routed it through the pines, the Snake Pit still decides who wins in March.
