The Loop is not one golf course but two, laid over the same land. Play it clockwise and it is the Black course; come back the next day and play the identical fairways counter-clockwise, and it becomes the Red — a different set of tee shots, different approach angles into the same greens, a different round of golf entirely. The routing alternates by the day, so the course a golfer plays on Tuesday is, in every meaningful way, not the course played on Wednesday.

The idea is old before it is new. The Old Course at St Andrews was itself once played in both directions, and for more than a century has occasionally reverted to 'left-hand' routing for a single ceremonial day. Tom Doak built The Loop as a genuine modern revival of that lost tradition — not a novelty hole or a gimmick nine, but a full 18 engineered from the ground up to function equally well running each way. He has called it the boldest routing he has ever attempted, since every corridor, green pad, and bunker had to make sense read in both directions at once.

The Loop opened in 2016 on land adjoining Forest Dunes Golf Club, the Tom Weiskopf-designed course that first put this stretch of north-central Michigan on the golf map. Doak's design team — working through Renaissance Golf Design — shaped wide, minimalist fairways and firm, contoured greens suited to the sandy soil of the Roscommon outwash plain, the same glacial ground that gives the region's best courses their natural drainage and low-profile, links-like feel.

It arrived to immediate acclaim, drawing golf-course pilgrims to a remote corner of the state for the rare chance to play what amounts to two Doak designs for the price of one green fee. The Loop is walked, not ridden, reinforcing the sense that this is golf stripped back to its oldest instincts — a piece of ground, a routing, and the simple trick of running it the other way.
