The Story
A links-caliber course built from sand and jack pine in Michigan's north woods.

Forest Dunes sits on a stretch of ground that has no business existing this far from an ocean: a sprawling bed of sandy glacial outwash beneath the jack pines of north-central Michigan, near Roscommon and the edge of the Huron National Forest. When Tom Weiskopf found it in the late 1990s, he recognized a rarity inland golf almost never offers — soil that drains like a British links and rolls like one too. He and design partner Ron Whitten opened the course in 2002, and the comparisons to seaside golf started immediately, minus the sea.

Weiskopf's routing asks a golfer to think rather than simply swing. Fairways run wide and inviting off the tee, but the sandy waste areas, subtle ridgelines, and firm, fast turf reward the approach played on the ground as much as the one struck through the air. It is a walking course in spirit as much as practice — no hole crowds the next, and the quiet of the pines does the rest, standing in for the ocean wind that shaped the links this course so often gets likened to.

In 2009, Arkansas businessman Lew Thompson bought the struggling club and began building it into a true destination. The signature addition came in 2016, when Thompson brought in architect Tom Doak to build The Loop — a reversible 18-hole course played clockwise one day and counterclockwise the next, the first course of its kind constructed in the modern era. Weiskopf's original design, now known simply as the Forest Dunes course, remained the resort's anchor and the reason golfers found their way north in the first place.

Today Forest Dunes is regularly named among the best public courses in America, a two-course sand-country resort built in a corner of Michigan few golfers thought to look. Weiskopf's routing is the quieter of the two courses now, but it is the one that proved the ground itself — pine, sand, and all — was worth the trip.
