Harvey S. Firestone built this course for his own employees. In 1929, with the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company at the height of its power, he opened a private park on the south side of Akron and gave the South Course to Bert Way — an English pro who had finished runner-up at the 1899 U.S. Open — to design as a place for factory workers and executives alike to play. The course opened on August 10, 1929, with Firestone himself striking the ceremonial first shot.
For thirty years it was a fine, unremarkable club course. Then, in 1959 and 1960, Robert Trent Jones Sr. arrived with instructions to make it hard enough for a major championship. He obliged completely — seven new tees, more than fifty bunkers, two new ponds, and a card stretched out to over 7,100 yards at a demanding par 70. The gentle employee course Bert Way had built became, almost overnight, one of the most punishing tests in American golf.
The PGA of America brought its championship to Firestone three times on the strength of that redesign: Jay Hebert held off Jim Ferrier by a shot in 1960, Al Geiberger won by four in 1966, and Jack Nicklaus — who treated Firestone almost as a second home course — took the title in 1975. In between and after, the South Course carried the World Series of Golf for decades, from its start in 1962 through its run as an official PGA Tour stop into the late 1990s, then continued as the WGC-NEC and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational through 2018. No one owned that tournament like Tiger Woods, who won it a record eight times, matching the PGA Tour mark for most victories at a single event.
The course's signature hole needs no embellishment: the par-3 16th, guarded by water and stretched past 220 yards, has been known simply as 'The Monster' since Arnold Palmer's era, and it still decides rounds today. Since 2019, Firestone South has hosted PGA Tour Champions' Senior Players major — now the Kaulig Companies Championship — carrying Jones's championship test into a new generation of golf's greats.
