The Story
Robert Trent Jones Sr. turned loose on water — the North asks a question the famous South never does.

Firestone Country Club began in 1929 as a company course: Harvey Firestone built it for the people who worked at his tire plant in Akron. The South Course became one of the most recognisable venues in American golf — Robert Trent Jones Sr. rebuilt it in 1960 into the 7,400-yard par 70 that hosted PGA Championships, the American Golf Classic and, for two decades, a World Golf Championship.

The North came later. Jones returned in 1969 to build a second full-length course on the property, and he built a different animal: par 72 over 7,125 yards, with water in play on more than half the holes. Where the South is a corridor of trees and a demand for straight, long iron play, the North makes you carry things and choose lines. It is the course at Firestone where a shot-maker can separate himself.

The North's own tournament record is modest next to its neighbour's — it took the American Golf Classic in 1976 when the South was otherwise engaged — and that is much of its appeal. Everyone knows the South's 16th, 'The Monster.' Fewer people know that the second course at Firestone was drawn by the same architect at the height of his career, and that it plays like he was enjoying himself.

The PGA Tour event was played at Firestone from 1961 to 1976, on the South Course except for its final year on the North.
