Fallen Oak began, in a sense, in the Nevada desert. In the early 1990s, casino owner Steve Wynn had just watched Tom Fazio complete Shadow Creek — a manufactured Eden built from flat scrubland outside Las Vegas — and wanted the same trick performed for his Beau Rivage casino on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The plan sat unbuilt for years. Wynn's company was absorbed into MGM Grand, and it was MGM that finally handed Fazio the piney, low-lying acreage north of Biloxi and asked him to do it again.

Fazio moved more than two million cubic yards of earth to build elevation into flat coastal pineland, routing the course through stands of longleaf pine and magnolia and around lakes he shaped himself. It opened in 2006, roughly fifteen minutes inland from the casino floor, as a course built with no membership roll at all — the only way onto Fallen Oak has ever been as a guest of the Beau Rivage Resort, a private world reserved for whoever is staying at the hotel that built it.

The course takes its name from an oak tree, split and partially fallen, that still stands along the 18th fairway — Fazio left it in place rather than clear it, and it became the course's signature marker as much as any bunker or green. At 7,487 yards from the tips over greens of TifEagle Bermuda, it was built with championship golf in mind from the start.

That instinct proved right: from 2010 through 2019, Fallen Oak hosted PGA Tour Champions' annual stop on the Gulf Coast, drawing past major champions back to Mississippi pines for a week each year before the tournament moved on. It remains what it was always meant to be — a Fazio course of real teeth, kept quiet behind a hotel guest list.
