The Story
Bentgrass fairways cut through two million years of black lava.

Black Desert Resort sits on a stretch of southern Utah that geology never smoothed over — a field of jet-black basalt, laid down by small local volcanoes over roughly two million years, wedged against the red-rock country outside St. George and Snow Canyon. Most developers would have hauled the lava away. Instead, the course was routed straight through it, so fairways of green bentgrass thread between walls and outcrops of raw black rock instead of hiding from them.

It was Tom Weiskopf's last design. The 1973 British Open champion and Hall of Fame architect broke ground on the course in 2021 alongside his longtime design partner, Phil Smith, only to be diagnosed with cancer as construction got underway. Weiskopf died in August 2022, before grassing was finished that December. Smith carried the design across the finish line, true to the plan the two of them had walked out over the lava together — wide, playable corridors, most fairways 70 to 100 yards across, built for a resort golfer rather than a Tour pro chasing a card. The course opened to daily-fee play on May 27, 2023.

The Tour arrived fast. In 2024, the PGA Tour brought its new Black Desert Championship to the course as part of the FedExCup Fall — the first professional event ever played there — and 26-year-old Matt McCarty won it for his first Tour title. The following year the event took on a new title sponsor as the Bank of Utah Championship, and in May 2025 the LPGA staged its own inaugural Black Desert Championship presented by Greater Zion, won by Haeran Ryu. Two tours, in two years, found their way to the lava field.

What holds the course together is the contrast nobody built on purpose — the exact place where dark volcanic rock meets green turf meets red desert meets blue sky, over and over, for eighteen holes. It is one of the newest courses in the country and already one of the most photographed, a Utah landscape that simply happened to have room for golf.
