The Story
The oldest ground at Bethpage — a private club's course, absorbed into a public park and reworked by Tillinghast.

Before Bethpage State Park existed there was the Lenox Hills Country Club, a private club on this piece of Long Island. In the early 1930s the Bethpage Park Authority bought it, along with the surrounding farmland, and handed the whole property to A. W. Tillinghast. He built three new courses — Black, Red and Blue — and reworked the club's existing layout into what is now the Green.

That history makes the Green the oldest golf ground on the property, and it plays like it: par 71, a shade under 6,400 yards from the back, with a more intimate scale than the courses Tillinghast laid out from scratch. Corridors are tighter, the routing is older-fashioned, and the walk is shorter — a course from an earlier idea of the game, kept alive inside a public park.

It is also the quiet one. The Black draws the crowds and the championships; the Green draws people who want to be finished in three and a half hours. Same clubhouse, same price list, same open tee sheet — a private club's course that anyone can now play.
