Mike Keiser made his fortune selling recycled-paper greeting cards, but his obsession was the golf he'd played on trips to Scotland and Ireland — firm, wind-scoured turf laid over dunes, with no cart path or water feature in sight. American golf had drifted toward manicured parkland and target greens, and Keiser wanted to build something that had almost disappeared from the country entirely: a real links course, on real linksland. He found it on a remote, wind-battered stretch of the southern Oregon coast, above the Pacific near the small town of Bandon — land so unlikely for development that almost no one else had wanted it.

To design it, Keiser passed over the established names and hired David McLay Kidd, a Scotsman in his mid-twenties who had never built a golf course of his own. Kidd had grown up around the game — his father, Jimmy Kidd, was the longtime head greenkeeper at Gleneagles — but he was, by any professional measure, untested. He spent long days walking the property before drawing a line, letting the dunes and clifftops dictate the routing rather than imposing one on the land.

Bandon Dunes opened in 1999 to a reception no one had quite predicted: a young unknown's first design, built on a piece of Oregon coastline most developers would have passed by, was immediately hailed as the finest links course built in America in generations. Firm fescue fairways, ocean-blown greens, and a strict walking-only policy — no carts, caddies or a pull-cart instead — made clear this was not a resort course dressed up in links clothing. It was the real thing.

The course's success gave Keiser the confidence — and the means — to keep building, and Bandon Dunes Golf Resort grew around it: Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails, Old Macdonald, and Sheep Ranch all followed on the same stretch of coast. But the original course remains the one that proved the idea could work at all, and it made Kidd's career overnight. A quarter-century later, golfers still walk it the way Kidd intended — into the wind, off the cliffs, with the Pacific never out of view.
